Lavender Honey: Benefits and uses in Pharma, Food Supplements and as sweet and spreads

lavender honey

Building up from the well-known benefits and popular approval of lavender, Lavender Honey stands out as one of the most beloved honey varieties around the world.

Learn more about lavender honey benefits and how it’s being incorporated by the pharma, cosmetics and food supplement industries as part of the evergrowing honey market.

Lavender Honey

This honey is a type of monofloral honey variety made from the nectar of the lavender flowers.

Lavender is a perennial, herbaceous plant from the genus Lavandula known for its purple flowers and distinct fragrance that originates from the Mediterranean area, as it prefers hot temperatures and dry soil to grow.

These flowers have been known since ancient times for their many therapeutic uses, while their nectar is used by bees to create the singular Lavender Honey.

Which are its organoleptic notes?

  • The color may vary from white to very light amber, gold and copper or bright yellow, depending of the variety of the flower, cantueso or espliego.
  • Raw Lavender Honey presents a moderate crystallization rate. When it crystallizes, it does so in the form of fine crystals.
  • This honey variety’s aroma presents delicate floral and woody notes and is not considered very strong. Sometimes, slight camphor notes can also be appreciated.

What does it taste?

The taste of this honey is often described as medium sweet with moderate acidic and salty notes.

Lavender stoechas is charaterizied by a sweet taste, in some cases with slight acid notes.

Lavender espliego has a sweet taste with clear acidic undertones. When the honey is a darker colour, it has salty undertones.

How is it produced?

As described above, this honey is produced from the nectar of lavender flowers. Once the nectar is collected, its production follows the natural process of making honey, which is similar to other honey varieties:

  • The nectar is blended with an enzyme secreted at the bees’ mouths.
  • Bees share this mix and then fan the wings at the finished product so that water content is reduced
  • They store the resulting substance in wax cells in their hive and then cover it

It’s important to understand that this is how pure, high-quality and organic raw Lavender Honey is produced. On the other hand, honey producers aiming for a Lavender Honey of a lower quality might resort to other methods, such as creating “lavender-infused” honey.

Lavender Honey benefits

Tthis honey contains a wide variety of vitamins and free amino acids that contribute to Lavender Honey benefits.

Among these, a high level of Tyrosine stands out compared to other honey varieties, as shown by research by Hermosín, Chicón and Cabezudo (2003). This amino acid is related to the following advantages:

  • Enhance neurotransmitter activity, including the production of dopamine. This, in turn, leads to a number of benefits such as improvements in the treatment of depression, anxiety, stress or attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It has also been linked to enhancing premenstrual syndrome (PMS), Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and chronic fatigue
  • Melanin production
  • Production of estrogen
  • Linked to the treatment of infertility issues
  • Antimycotic properties, including fighting certain fungi such as Candida albicans, candida krusei and cryptococcus neoformans, as shown by research.

Additionally, other Lavender Honey benefits not specifically related to Tyrosine include:

  • Wound healing properties
  • Antioxidant, due to certain honey’s flavonoids and phenom compounds
  • Antispasmodic and anti-convulsant

Lavender Honey vs other types of honey

Looking at each honey variety’s origin, each of them presents distinct advantages directly linked to their production process.

For instance, acacia honey is known for its powerful antioxidant activity, eucalyptus honey is particularly beneficial for treating respiratory issues and rosemary honey presents extra inflammatory properties.

In the case of Lavender honey and as stated above, this honey’s high content of the Tyrosine amino acid makes it stand out from other honey varieties for its benefits regarding brain functioning. Mood enhancement and dopamine production are the two distinct Lavender Honey benefits that often stand out.

At the same time, it’s been recommended for calcium deficiency issues and bone-related problems such as osteoporosis.

Additionally, this honey typically presents a low pollen content compared to other honey varieties, which might make it adequate for people who are allergic to pollen.

Why choose it to expand your honey portfolio in the sweet & spreads category?

A multitude of market forecasts agree: the honey sector is and will continue to experience an expansion, guided by consumers’ increasing interest in natural, organic remedies. This is paired with growth for the vitamin industry.

However, the growth of natural bee products also means competition in the market is more fierce than ever. This translates into the need for brands and companies to differentiate and work towards building successful honey portfolios.

The choice of this high quality, organically grown honey might contribute to this success, as it’s derived from a well-known plant and presents the interesting distinct advantages delineated above.

How to use Lavender Honey as ingredient

The pharma and food supplement sectors have been focusing on beehive products for a while now, pushed by consumers’ growing interest in honey as a natural remedy with many health benefits.

Pharma and cosmetics

  • Pharma products aiming at cough relief, as well as those for wound healing have long focused on honey. The outstanding benefits of Lavender Honey in terms of brain functioning might also guide decisions in incorporating this product to pharma products.
  • As botanical cosmetics take centerstage, the inclusion of this honey helps brands build a portfolio based on its melanin production capacities as well as its antioxidant properties.

Food supplements

As the European supplements market continues expanding (Grand View Research, Inc), companies are looking at bee products and this honey in particular to respond to consumer demands.

Tablets, capsules, powders, liquids, energy bars and medicated confectionery represent the diverse formulas in which this honey variety might be employed.
